With great houses, plantations, pirate dens and the attractive chattel houses, Barbados has a rich history in architecture. This little island has some of the world’s best examples of architecture, dating back to the sixteenth century.
Rare possessions, mahogany furniture, ornaments, household artefacts, big wheeled buggies, art and sculpture decorate these homes in a unique setting of tropical colour and building style.
The Open House Programme held by The Barbados National Trust features some of the island’s most beautiful and historic private homes to visitors and locals alike.
These lovely homes are opened one day a year with the kind permission of the owners. The Barbados National Trust’s Open House Programme has been offered for the past 30 years on a Wednesday evening from January to April each year.
This programme has now been a winter tradition for tourist to the island and locals to gain insight into Barbadian architecture, history, culture and lifestyles. Some of the properties are architectural wonders, others carry a great history, and some are simply too elegant to miss.
One week you will see anything from a 17th century plantation house, to a Sandy Lane dream villa; where antique chic meets modern luxury. You may even see something that inspires you on decorating your own place! In addition, in the gardens you will find fresh juices, homemade rum punch and snacks being served on the lawns.
There are also books on Barbados and the Caribbean on sale, as well as selected artists and craftspeople selling their goods. For more information on the dates and houses on show, click the link to visit the Barbados National Trust website.
